Problem
Miranda was frustrated by the career opportunities that were available to her in her current company and industry. She was highly skilled, had her MBA but was constantly blocked from progressing by the ‘old school’ approach – expectations of time served and male dominance in senior positions – these were the stereo typical attitudes of many of her colleagues.
She had some ambitious goals that were not going to be satisfied unless someone was willing to take a chance on her where she could prove herself.
Solution
We worked first on clearly identifying Miranda’s strengths and skills and then effectively packaging those in career documents that were differentiated and that stood out from the in box full of resumes.
Then we set about identifying industries and employers who would be more open to her profile – hiring her for skills, ability and potential versus who she worked for or what she had done in the past.
Over the course of 5 years we worked together at all points of her career decision making and action, advising her on three career moves in that time, this resulted in her gaining extensive leadership and senior responsibility at an incredibly young age. Whilst the companies were smaller in scale through her abilities they were able to get much higher exposure in the global arena that got her noticed by much larger companies with bigger aspirations.
Result
Miranda has now landed in a role that will expose her to the top management of one of the largest companies in the world – a company that would not even have hired her 5 years ago in a junior executive role. She has international exposure and responsibility and is set to become one of the senior managers in the organization well before she is 40.
